On June 9, 2018 countless members of Isaac’s extended family, friends and actual blood relatives going back generations arrived at The Montrose Pub (in Montrose, Michigan) for what was sure to be an epic and very memorable day. They came from all over the USA for this very special moment in history. It began with a simple idea and it continued to grow from local media to social media. It went viral many times over and over and even now the party photos have reached thousands of views.
Isaac Fabela was born in Texas on June 6, 1918. He grew up and loved to travel. He was always working some odd job as a kid and worked hard his entire life. Ike never stopped working multiple jobs while he faithfully provided for his family. Ike explained, “It was important my family always have a good meal and clothes. I am proud to this day how they were raised.” When speaking of his family Isaac always gets very emotional.
This was the most exciting, fun party in the history of parties. This was a centennial birthday for a man who refused to accept the honors on his very special day. This is the type of man Sgt. Isaac Fabela is in body, spirit and soul. “This is a great day! I am happy but it’s about my family, the grandkids, great grandkids and friends. It’s not about me! Mike if you write a story that makes me look like a hero, you’re going to hear from me!” He continued, “I do not deserve this Mike.”
The 100 year old US Army Veteran who is always giving credit to other veterans refuses to accept the title hero. “My brother was killed in the Pacific, he is a hero. So are many others not me,” he asserted.
During the party those who came to say happy birthday were out the door quickly having paid their respect. Ike’s words were always the same, “Thank you, can I get you something to drink or eat?” This humble man isn’t into himself even 100 years after birth. Hours into the party I asked if I could help cut the cake and you would think the first piece was for the guest of honor. No way, he said to me, “Mike let’s make sure everybody gets some cake and if there is some leftover we can share a piece.” At no point did he allow this party to be about himself. He is truly a humble man. Isaac is a very proud Latino American but he made it clear without reservation. I am an American and I love this country and I do not apologize to anybody for defending it. If they don’t like it they can leave, period.
In accepting an award Ike, simply could not resist a little jab at an elected official. Former Lt. Gov. John Cherry recalled many years ago I knocked on many doors and my political career never was the same as when Ike took me door to door to his friends and after he even gave me a lecture on what it is Candidate Cherry needed to do better while campaigning. Also in attendance were State Senators, Representatives and local elected Officials.
The families were all decked out in T-Shirts identifying the generation in their family tree. Also there were T-Shirt that said TEAM “ COOL “ Ike a new nickname given to him by La Voz beat writer Michael Farage ( that would be me) while opening the mail of the ( estimated at 55,000 cards and letters) were several offers to date or get married. The family allowed me the honor of wearing a shirt during the party. He has a big family and all of them are simply very warm and welcoming caring and kind individuals. I was honored to interview this man and hero.
Isaac Fabela is one of the most courageous men walking this planet. He set the standard and lived by it, he walked the walk and talked the talk, he is a Father, Grand Father and friend and even if he refuses to say it he is a true American hero, this patriot is everything that is great about the greatest generation. He is happy, proud and he is fearless! He is also the standard for which all veterans should be measured in body, spirit, soul, and patriotism.
Isaac Fabela you’re a true hero. You may not like to hear it but 55,000 letters and 500 family and friends can’t be wrong. They came from all over not for the little you did wrong but for the millions you did right. Who would have guessed in the era of Face book, Instagram, Smart phones & Twitter? The new King of social media is 100 years young and is now also known as “COOL Ike.”
Lolie Fabela – An amazing journey, his tears for those who didn’t come home, watching dad when he’s touched by someone’s story, the way he has touched the world. How proud he is to be an American soldier, the love for his family.
