Gang Banger Profiles: Accused
A Report covered by WZZM in Grand Rapids, MI. ) — Because police say they’re gang members, the prison sentence for two people accused in the shooting of a 15-year old girl could be twice as long.
Wyoming Police say 19-year old Rosibel Velasquez and 18-year old Jose Sanchez wounded the girl when they fired into a group from a rival gang Wednesday night. They are charged with assault to do great bodily harm and, under a new law, committing a felony as a gang member. The law was passed last year to help police fight gangs.
If convicted, the suspects could face a 10-year sentence for shooting the girl and 20 years for committing the crime while members of a gang. Wyoming Police believe this is the first prosecution under the new law since it was passed last year.
Website editor’s note: While the Community Voice/La Voz Magazine seeks to promote the positive aspects of our community, we must begin educating our youth about the life hazards that result from imitation of music videos and ganster “wanksta” wanabees.
If our youth want to fill the prisons of America-all they have to do is follow the crowd. Our leaders must be more active in reaching kids before they get to killing each other on the streets. Moms and Dads need to read the new laws and penalties to the kids and remind them that 20 years is a long time to be locked up for random acts of gang related violence. Our schools have failed these children and an orderly society will not tolerate the madness. Hopefully youth that visit this site will also see what becomes of people who terrorize communities through gangs. There is an out. Posted by Dr. José A. Flores
